Online Learning week 5 - Picture Discription

The street has a weird odour, the smell of death. A bald man, barely alive, wearing torn cloths, was itforcfully being dragged by two tall man. They are quite tall, and judging from them just using one hand to drag the bald an, they must be quite muscular. They are very well dressed, unlike the man being dragged. The walls beside them look like they have been burned or bomb, or maybe hit violently. The street looked as though a fight has happened there.

Q) Why does Scout get into fights with Cecil Jacobs and her cousin Francis? What do their comments suggest about Maycomb as a community? What does Scout's response reveal about her?

A) Scout get fights with them because of his father defending a black men, but his father is a white men. Francis always called Atticus a niger-lover which was really insulting. It suggest that Maycomb is a community that discriminates black. Scout's responses shows that she agrees with her father to protect the innocent.

Q)What connection might there be between what is required of Atticus to shoot the mad dog and what is required of him to defend Tom Robinson?
A)Atticus might need to sacrifice some of his dignity to shoot the mad dog and defend Tom Robinson as by defending Tom, other people will see him as a Negro-lover.

Q) What do Scout and Jem find in the knothole of the Radley tree? What other signs suggest that Boo may not be the monster the children imagine him to be?
A) Scout and Jem found a lot of different types of stuff that are usually something a children possess. Boo puts the stuff there. Since the things in the knothole are all what a typical children would have, this shows that Boo may not be the monster the children imagine him to be.Secondly, there are no monsters in this world and nobody ever saw Boo so they wouldn't know whether Boo is a monster or not.

Q) In relation to Boo Radley and his house, how do Scout, Jem and Dill try to test their courage ? What feeling do they have about Boo?
A) They tried to test their courage by touching the door of Boo Radley's house, which was rumored to be extremely dangerous. They believed that Boo was dangerous and very evil person that is beast-like as the rumors says. This also shows that Boo had a very bad reputation in Maycomb and the three children are naive enough to believe this rumors.

Term Test Reflection

This term, I didn't manage to receive good marks for my test. I think I didn't listen much in class or read much books. Having a weak foundation, I can't do much. Because of that, I didn't manage to score a high score for this term's LA test. In fact, I failed it. By the next term, I will study much harder and listen in class so that i can achieve a better score. I hope that my hard work next term will pay off and achieve desirable marks.

What memories of your own childhood come to mind as you read about Scout's experiences?
Looking at scout's experiences, which were playful , childish and daring, it reminds me of my own. She was daring enough to touch Boo's door, playful and childish to act and laugh at Boo and believed that Boo was a monster. As for my own childhood, I had my childhood at Malaysia. My younger cousin and I would take newspaper from a stack and go out along the road where my grandparents house were and we would wrap the newspaper around the young papaya tree, which wasn't event half a meter tall, and we would find way to smuggle match stick out and burn the trees, and we usually end up getting scolded by our grandfather. We were around  5 years old that time and the only thing we could play with was, match sticks, plants, the stray dogs and all. We usually end up burning a lot things because that's the only thing we knew what to do. No matter how many time we get scolded or punished we would always attempt again.

Racism

In real life, now, racism still exist. For example, most adults, or teaching website tells us not to tell others about where you live. And they usually use a foreign black worker as example. They would say you should not give strangers your personal information, like when you go home, what time you are alone at home. And for some reason, the stranger is either black workers or young gangsters. This obviously shows that the blacks has a symbolism of people who commit crimes, or people who do bad things, people without moral value, because they are from a country where families have no decent background. I think this is definitely not true, they like us are humans, jut that they are foreigner workers, what makes us think they are most prone to commit crimes?

Burning mississippi

This movie is quite unrealistic, although it portrayed a very important point that the racial discrimination was very evident yet not much people seems to care about it, as if it was normal, even the mayor did not do anything about it. It did showed how the whites in Mississippi discriminated the blacks. It showed how merciless and evil the whites were, they killed people without regret, and also without reason. It also showed how the community separated the black from the white, let the white have authority over the blacks.

However, this movie only portrayed part of the truth, as the whole movie only showed white men doing wrong things, like killing people, but all the black seem to be good people, that never committed any crime at all, which is impossible, thus they purposely only showed how bad the whites are, and showed the blacks are angels. This is a irony, as it is suppose to be telling people discrimination and racism is not good,as it sheds blood, but it seems to be racist against the whites, saying that they are evil people, which seems to contradict each other, thus it is quite unrealistic

1st person VS 3rd person

1st person vs 3rd person

1st person is to used when you want the reader to be the person the story, to feel, to think the character is saying. It can be also to limited the knowledge of the full story, to create surprises , unexpected events and make you feel surprise as if you were the character. This also can be achieved with 3rd person, however , when you try to achieve this with 1st person, it will be more effective. However, writing from 1st person can create a lot of awkward phrases, that does not make logic, as you are looking from a person point of, and only that. If you write things from top view, or other point of view, it ten to defy logic.

3rd person is good as you can change the the point of view you like, and you can choose what part of the story you want to show the reader. You can show the thinking of different character, and effectively compare them other, and you can develop all the characters very well. too, you can avoid a lot of logic mistake that can be made while using 1st person.

Compromises

A compromise means that when both parties or when both sides reach a mutual agreement or acceptance of terms, however, what they receive from the agreement is not what they fully want as they gave up, or in other words, sacrifice, part of their demand.

I think this concept or idea of agreement is very good, as it is very hard for you get everything you want/demand for, especially when it requires help from another party, thus it is important to give up some part of it so that both party can gain/benefit most from the agreement. This way, both party are happy and would remain in good terms and too they get what they want, which also means its a win-win situation, with some sacrifices required to be made. Thus I like the idea of compromise.

However, I think not compromises can be successful, as if one party sacrifices more than the other party, it would not be fair, one party may not have reach the maximum benefit from the agreement, thus I think when you are about to make a compromise with someone , it is better if the other party is in good terms with you, as they would like both parties to get as much benefit as both parties can make.

Picture Description

It’s a bright and warm afternoon, perfect condition for a picnic or sunbathing at the beach. From the top, it looked like there were hundreds, or even thousands or brownish- black creatures that have a resemblance with ants that could stand on two legs. They were either lying or standing on either the land or the water. On dry ground, some of the “ants” were resting under colourful mushrooms that grown out of the golden sand, some were moving around, as if looking for food near the water, while others laid down on colourful scraps of leaves, letting the relentless run burn their skin. However, other then the golden sand and water, there was a solid grey land, where there were beetles roaming to and fro with the ants. Miniature plants were grown beside the grey lane, and strangely there was also a mushroom growing out of there too.

Prejudice

Prejudice

Know

I do not know anything about “Prejudice”. I may have seen it before at some point of time but I do not think I have heard anyone saying about it.

Want

I want to know what it means, what is it used for and anything that has to do with it.

Learnt

I learnt that prejudice is a type of judgement, based on first impression, which is not good as looks and impressions can be extremely deceiving , thus we should not judge base on first impression. I also learnt that prejudice can cause a lot of trouble, and if its extreme, it can cause riots and thus people die.
